Is it too hot outside? With people almost suffering from heatstroke during summer, it’s natural to worry about the well-being of the plants in your house. If you have plants on your roof, are they drying out or falling due to excessive heat? If you’re unsure about how to take care of your plants, don’t worry! You can quickly learn 10 simple tips to keep them healthy and thriving.
1) Each plant should be watered well in the morning and evening, i.e., before sunrise and after sunset. If you cannot water it in the early morning, you can do so by 8 a.m.
2) If you choose to water a tree during this time, it’s important to ensure that the water doesn’t come into contact with the leaves. If water droplets accumulate on the leaves, they can act like a magnifying glass in the sun and potentially cause the leaves to burn or even die, especially if they are young.
3) It’s important to be careful not to overwater your plants, as this can cause the roots to rot. On the other hand, if you don’t give your plants enough water, they may suffer from problems like dieback or wound disease. Sometimes the soil at the base of the plant may appear dry, even if the soil under the tub is still wet and soft. In this case, you should hold off on watering. To check if the soil is wet or dry, stick your finger one and a half to two inches into the soil. Only water your plant if the soil is not wet. When watering, make sure to fill the pot with water until it reaches the bottom.
4) Quick and regular removal of excess water is necessary in case of sudden heavy rain.
5) During the hot summer season, there is a risk that the tree may sag suddenly due to the high temperature. Therefore, it is important not to water the plant hastily. Instead, move the plant to a shaded area to cool the soil. Once the soil has cooled down, you can add water to it.
6) If you purchase a young tree sapling from a nursery, it is recommended to provide some light shade to prevent excessive sunlight from reaching the tree.
7) When fertilizing in excess heat, avoid giving large amounts at once. Instead, give small amounts of water over several days.
8) In the afternoon, if you notice that the leaves of a tree have fallen completely, you can spray a little water on them using a spray bottle without watering the roots. This will help the tree to revive. Additionally, you can try mulching with dry leaves, coconut husks, wood chips, or cocopeat at the base of the tree throughout the summer to keep the soil moist. Before watering, remove the mulching and check if the soil is dry.
9) Shade nets can be an effective solution for protecting roof plants from excessive heat and sun. They can reduce the amount of direct sunlight by 50 to 75 percent, which helps to lower the temperature around the plant and protect it from harmful ultraviolet rays. By using shade nets, the plant can remain green and fresh even in the hottest summer months.
10) It is essential to maintain proper humidity levels in the garden by controlling the temperature. Low humidity can cause various problems for plants, including burnt, yellowed or curled leaves. In such situations, we can take measures to save the plants. For instance, we can run a large stand fan on the roof for a few hours a day or use an automatic fogger to spray water in the morning and afternoon. This will increase the humidity in the garden by producing cold water vapor.
